Agennix Presents Positive RhLF Cancer Results at AACR Meeting HOUSTON - March 30, 2004 - Agennix Inc. is presenting results from pre-clinical studies demonstrating the anti-cancer activity of recombinant human lactoferrin (rhLF). The data will be presented on Tuesday afternoon, March 30, at the 95th Annual Meeting of the American Association for Cancer Research (AACR) in Orlando, Florida. RhLF is a promising new immunomodulatory drug that shows activity against a variety of tumor types in animal experiments and in early data from human clinical trials. The data presented at AACR is also in press at the International Journal of Cancer. Agennix demonstrated the anti-cancer activity of orally administered rhLF alone and in combination with chemotherapy in tumor-bearing mice. Monotherapy of a squamous cell carcinoma in a syngeneic murine model caused a 66% tumor growth inhibition that was statistically significant over placebo (p<0.01) and comparable to that obtained by therapy with Cis-platinum, docetaxel or radiotherapy. Mice receiving both rhLF and Cis-platinum showed a statistically significant improvement over either drug alone. Tumor growth inhibition with oral rhLF was also observed in a murine renal cell carcinoma model (p<0.01). In a mammary adenocarcinoma model, oral rhLF also induced tumor shrinkage including complete rejection of established tumors. RhLF appears to be safe and very well tolerated, having been administered orally to over 210 people without a single drug related serious adverse event. In Phase I/II clinical trials in cancer patients with a range of tumors, rhLF also showed indications of anti-tumor efficacy. The most encouraging results, though in a small number of patients, were observed in renal cell cancer and included a confirmed and durable partial response, a dramatic reduction in the rate of tumor growth rate, and a high incidence of stable disease (83%). Agennix's lead cancer indications are renal cell cancer and non-small cell cancer and Phase II trials are underway or starting shortly in both areas. About Agennix: Agennix, a privately owned Houston-based biopharmaceutical company, is the world leader in the development of recombinant human lactoferrin (rhLF), a natural immunomodulatory protein. Oral rhLF has demonstrated human clinical and pre-clinical efficacy in treating cancer, and pre-clinical efficacy in treating asthma and accelerating wound healing. Agennix is the first and only company to manufacture substantial quantities of human lactoferrin and holds global patents on its technology, with over 71 issued patents, and more than 50 pending patents. Agennix has six Phase II human clinical trials currently underway in the treatment of cancer, asthma, and diabetic foot ulcers. More information about Agennix is available on the Company's web site at http://www.agennix.com. |
